The pianist and pedagogue Alberto Portugheis was born in La Plata, Argentina, to parents of Russian and Romanian descent. His international career began after winning First Prize at the Geneva Virtuosity Competition. He performs in recitals, chamber music concerts and as a soloist with important orchestras, including: Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Philharmonia, English Chamber Orchestra, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Paris and Israel Sinfoniettas, Orchester de la Suisse Romande , National Symphony of Argentina, Buenos Aires Philharmonic. His annual Steinway master classes are now legendary.
Alberto Portugheis’ repertoire includes music from the baroque to the contemporary, with several composers who wrote especially for him. His acclaimed recordings include: Chopin’s 4 Ballads, Alfred Nieman’s 2nd Sonata, Ginastera Complete Music for Piano and Chamber Music with Piano, Khachaturian Piano Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, Khachaturian Solo Works, Sonatas for Cello and Piano by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich with cellist Gwyneth George, a CD dedicated to the piano music of Rossini. In 2013, a double CD was released with The Complete Piano Works by Spanish composer Elena Romero, a CD with music by Bach and Dinu Lipatti, together with Italian pianist Stefano Greco and the Youth Orchestra of León, Spain, conducted by Georgina Sánchez.
Alberto Portugheis is a founding member and former vice president of the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, vice president of the European Association of Piano Teachers and founder of the Latin American Association of Pianist Pedagogues.
Like his colleague and compatriot Daniel Barenboim, Alberto Portugheis dedicates much time and energy to campaigning for lasting world peace through the organization he presides, Humanity United for Universal Demilitarization (HUFUD | Honorary President: Martha Argerich). Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 and 2018 for his peace work and proposals, Portugheis published two books, The Game of War and A Path to Peace, followed by $$$$$$$s In Their Hearts
